Secret Agents

One thing that’s unique about being followers of Christ, is that we are like secret agents on earth. We have this secret mission: to spread God’s love and his word wherever we go, and in whatever we do. We are not of this world; we are agents of Heaven for God. Our mission on this earth, is to display to others God’s goodness, and to show his love for them. Given the world we live in, it is not an easy mission, but that makes it even more important. In a world that’s so broken and hurting, our assignment is to spread hope, to offer love, and to be a display of light. Yes, there will be people who go against us, and try to discourage us from completing these tasks, but that makes it even more important.

For those of us who have invisible disabilities, we are often discouraged by the fact that the able-bodied community does not understand us, or what we’re going through. But as secret agents for Christ, we cannot let that deter us. We have invisible disabilities, yes, but this gives us invisible superpowers that only we can possess. Superpowers that allow us to lead others to God. And others might say these aren’t real superpowers, that they are just ordinary things. But in a world that is so lost and shattered, our superpowers of empathy, compassion, and love, are anything but. They are what capture the love and word of God in a way that is like no other.

These things show others that they are loved for who they are, that they are fearfully and wonderfully made. These acts of heroism show others that they are perfect just the way they are, despite what society tells them. There is a quote that I love from Ashley Graham, who states, “Whatever someone else thinks is wrong about you – whether it’s your opinion or your body—is actually your superpower. I’m not here to make you feel ‘beautiful,’ whatever that means. I’m here to make you understand that true beauty is being okay with who you are. Being okay with who you are is a revolutionary act. And making someone else feel okay with who they are? That’s downright heroic.”

You see, being okay with and living our lives with an invisible disability is not just an act of self-confidence. It shows others around us that we are unafraid to be who God made us. We are his creation, and by living that out in everything we do, we get to be agents of Heaven on Earth. And for those of us with invisible disabilities, it just means we are top secret agents. You see, we look like the able-bodied society, but we have the compassion, and empathy that they often lack. We have X-ray vision to see the true beauty and goodness in those around us. When we help others see themselves as God does, we’ve brought light into the darkness, healing to the brokenhearted; we’ve accomplished our mission.
