This morning, as my family and I were getting ready for work, our power went out. It was suddenly pitch-black, and we were trying to get dressed and ready for the day. It got me thinking about the state of the world we live in today. How dark and gloomy and dreadful it seems sometimes. In those times, I’m able to remind myself that I have a built-in eternal light. That light is God. If we know God, there is no darkness we need fear; no situation is unknown by him. The Bible tells us, that he is with us. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). Deuteronomy 31:6 tells us, “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” 1 John 1:5-7 states, “This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”
When we know God, and trust in him, we walk with him, always, and he is our light. The Bible doesn’t tell us that God is only with us always if we are perfect and never mess up; he is simply with us always. Our God, the Good Shepherd, leads us, his sheep, by his light always, if we follow him and trust him. Even when the world goes dark and the streetlights dim, God’s light never goes out. His light is eternal and it doesn’t run on a battery, or depend on a charger, or anything. We simply have to choose to trust him. To trust that he is leading us out of the darkness and into the light.
