Isn’t it funny how we hide from God when we most need him? We run away from him, dodging the rubble of our lives, as it crashes down, as our world is falling apart. We don’t want him to see our messiness, and so, rather than come to him, we hide. We isolate ourselves from him. We believe the world and Satan’s lies that we shouldn’t go to God as we are right now. That God doesn’t want our brokenness. So, we push God aside, and hide from him, hoping that somehow, the longer we stay under the covers, one day things will just get better. A perfect God could never understand the brokenness we deal with as humans.

But God knows we’re broken, that we’re flawed, and he still loves us. God doesn’t wait for us to be fixed or healed, before he shows us his love to us. He wants us as we are. Broken pieces and all.  Our messiness and our hurt doesn’t scare God off. David tells us in Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” Just because he’s perfect doesn’t mean we have to be for him to love us. That’s part of what makes him such a good God, and a loving father. He loves us despite our flaws. Nothing we do or have gone through could ever make him love us less. “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39-39). God knew we wouldn’t be perfect, which is why he sent Jesus to die on the cross, so that despite our broken hearts, flawed character, and sin, we could have a place in Heaven, our true home, as children of the one true King.  

Don’t believe the enemy, when he screams, “God doesn’t want you, he could never use you, you’re too broken, too messy.” Just because his voice is loud, it doesn’t make his words true. Because evidence in the Bible, the living, breathing Word of God, reminds us time and time again, that messy and broken, are exactly who God chooses to fulfill his work on Earth.  Just look at Esther, Job, David, Rahab, Paul, Moses, Gideon, and Jonah. Those are just the start of the list of people in the Bible who messed up, or were deemed by society as nothings, too broken, before they fulfilled God’s work. Listen for God’s voice, confidently whispering, “You are chosen, you are enough, you are all together beautiful, my child.” The world around us has a way of skimming over true potential for what looks good on paper. We don’t often fit the world’s mold. But that’s okay, because we don’t serve the world; we serve God. So next time you want to run away, to escape, to break free from your shattered pieces, run directly to the arms of the one who makes us whole, and who loves us for who, and what we are, no matter what.
