This past Sunday, (March 29th), started Holy Week. This week isn’t just about what happened on the cross. It’s about what happened three days after that, Jesus’s resurrection. Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection, teach us a lot about unexpected outcomes. I imagine that Satan was crying out in victory, as hundreds of people gathered to mock Jesus as he hung nailed to the cross, the crown of thorns upon his head. Satan was probably throwing his head back in laughter, as Jesus was crying, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). And we know that Christ wondered why God would make him suffer this way, especially since he cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). So, Satan surely thought, that as the guards rolled the stone in front of the tomb where Jesus body lay, that he had finally won. The Messiah, after all, was dead, in his tomb.
Except Jesus wasn’t dead. The resurrection is indeed, without a doubt, the greatest comeback story of all time, in all of history.
On the third day, the stone had been rolled away. The tomb was empty. The guards, and I’m sure, Satan, were astonished beyond belief. In fact, I can only imagine Satan looking at God, stuttering, “B-Bu-But he, the tomb, the cross”, and God just smiling.
You see, Christ died on the cross for our sins, and he was resurrected on the third day for us. We know this, and yet we still lack faith in trusting God. When life gets hard, when the road ahead seems dark and insurmountable, when heartache after heartache piles up on top of another, we can trust that God is good, that the morning is coming. In Psalm 30:5, we are reminded that weeping may last for the night, but joy comes in the morning. I imagine the celebration among Jesus’s friends and family when they realized he had been resurrected that third, glorious morning, when they realized that Jesus, their Jesus, lived.
We, too, can have that same joy, that same celebration, that same hope, because He is our Savior, and He lives. Not just on Easter Sunday, but every day. We have nothing to fear, because our Jesus, lives. The tomb is empty. There is a song we used to sing in church that’s lyrics were, “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow, because He lives, all fear is gone, because I know, He holds the future. And life is worth the living, just because He lives. “ What a glorious reminder, that our Savior, as overcome death, has conquered all evil, and if we know him, we can shed off our fear. I saw a quote the other day that read, “In the darkest times of your life, your praise to God should be the loudest. Let the enemy know you aren’t afraid of the dark.” Our praising God in the dark, reminds the enemy who we belong to, the one who conquered death, and that we will not be moved.
We often forget, in the midst of our darkness, in the midst of our heartache and struggles, that our God, made the biggest plot twist, and the greatest comeback of all time. We often wonder how any good can come out of our hard times, out of our difficult places, but we forget that he can do the unfathomable, the impossible. He raised Christ from the dead. Just imagine what he can do with our lives if we only let him.
Our comeback is almost here. Sunday is coming.
