Watch the Giants Fall

Have you ever felt like other people roll their eyes and shake their heads at what you’re trying to do in life? Like what you’re trying to do is impossible, and you shouldn’t be so stupid to waste your time fighting for it? But you can’t see their reasoning at all. Because something deep inside of you is telling you to keep fighting for it.

Sometimes we feel like we are called to do something, by God, or by our soul deep inside of us, even though it doesn’t fully make sense to us, or anyone around us. But we still fight for it with all of our heart and soul. That’s probably exactly how David felt, when he was gearing up to fight Goliath to defend God’s name and the Israelites. When King Saul heard that David was going to try to fight & kill Goliath, he rebuked him, saying, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.” (1 Samuel 17:33). But David replied that his time as a shepherd, though it wasn’t preparation for combat to anyone else, had actually prepared him for this very battle. I imagine Saul and his army probably thought that David was insane, trading the sword and shield he’d been given for a sling and some stones. They most likely thought that David was going to be pulverized for sure. But David conquered Goliath, because he believed so strongly that God wouldn’t let him down. He fought for what he believed in, his God and his people. Even when those around him told him he was being foolish, that it was impossible for him, a shepherd, to conquer a man who had been a warrior his whole life, David pushed forward anyway.

You see, it doesn’t matter what others think, or if they believe that we’ll be able to accomplish what we’re trying to, not if we believe in it, and fight for it, with all our heart and soul. Especially when we’re struggling with chronic illness. We’re often told by those around us, doctors, coworkers, even friends and family, that what we’re trying to do is impossible, we should just sit back and let someone who has more strength, who is more qualified, do it. People often think of all of the reasons why something hard is impossible, reminding you of all of the things you’re not seeing, or thinking of as to why you can’t accomplish something.

But what they forget, is that you’re not standing or fighting alone. You have God on your side. And as Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” So don’t back down, don’t give up, just because the world says it’s impossible, or it can’t be done. If you believe in something, strong enough to fight for it, don’t let the world’s shouts of discouragement become your background noise, but instead, listen for that still small voice inside, and repeat it enough to yourself, so that it drowns out anything else around you.
