As human beings, we have all experienced uncertainty. As a matter of fact. In our lives, the one thing that we all know to be certain, is that we will face the unknown. Facing the unknown is terrifying sometimes, if I’m honest. Because we are all human, we want to control every aspect of our lives. We want to know that everything will turn out okay. If you’re anything like me, you plan every aspect of your life, trusting that if you stick to that plan, you’ll be just fine. And even if you’re not that detailed of a planner, you have a picture in your head of how things are supposed to go, how your life is supposed to work out.
However, how we plan for or expect the outcome to go, is seldom how it turns out. Loved ones are diagnosed with chronic conditions, cutbacks cause us to lose jobs, friends are not who we thought they are, money is tight, and so on. Worry, anxiety, doubt, and fear can become our best friends during times of uncertainty if we draw too close to them. They can swallow us whole.
Uncertainty and change are frightening to us. We like to stick with our routines and our habits we’ve grown accustomed to. Life is supposed to pitch us nice and easy, down-the-middle balls to hit. Why is it throwing so many fastballs, curveballs, and change-ups? I was just thrown a curveball the last time I was up to bat. Why is the pitcher throwing me another one?
Thankfully, in this game of life, God already knows what the pitcher’s next throw to the plate will be, and he’s like the coach on the third base line, pointing us where to go next, letting us know when we need to slide and when to stay on base and wait.
God gives us the strength and endurance we need during the unknowns and the ups and downs of our lives. When we don’t know if we can keep going, God is with us, holding us up with his righteous right hand, just like he promises in Isaiah 41:10. We will never know what tomorrow holds, but we can put our trust in the Lord and Savior who is holding our tomorrow in his hand, molding it together perfectly. 2 Timothy 4:17 states, “The Lord stood at my side and gave me strength.” God will be our strong and steady hand when the ground beneath is shaking. When life is constantly throwing you curveballs and change-ups, lift your eyes to your coach who never changes. He has your game plan drawn out. He’s just waiting for you to look to him for the next signal.
