Let Us Never Grow Too Busy for God

I don’t know if you struggle with this, but I know I do. I often find myself making empty promises to not only others, but to myself, such as “Oh, I’ll call to check in on that person later this week.” And then, about a million other things pile up on top of that one thing you vowed to do, and it never gets done. I feel like, as Christians, we often make up excuses for not reaching out to do more good and help others around us, in our church, in our community, maybe even in our own family.

We just don’t have time, it’s not our fault, we assure ourselves, for we just have too much going on right now. And surely, we do, what with all the bible studies we go to, or the sports games and practices we attend for our kids, or weddings we’re involved in, and so on, added onto the stress of handling daily life.

Now I am the first one to admit that this might seem implausible and too exhausting to add any more responsibilities onto all of these things…..

But one of our main responsibilities as followers of Christ Jesus is to share God’s love and grace with others, through our words and through our actions. If people look at the church, or Christians and general, and just see a bunch of people who are too busy to help others, or make empty promises, they’ll never want to step foot in our congregation. As a church and as Christians, we are called to “love one another with brotherly affection, and to outdo one another in showing honor” (Romans 12:10). This is because, as Christians, whatever we do, we should do as though we are serving the Lord, himself. Let us never grow too busy for God, that we neglect to share his love with others around us. It may not be possible to share his love every single moment of every single day, but if we work to do good for others every day, even if it’s just stopping to send them a text message or say a prayer for them, we are fulfilling Christ’s law. “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). Can you imagine if God grew too busy for us? If we prayed to him, and he just sent a text that said, “I’ll call this week.” It’d be pretty disheartening. Luckily, God will never grow too busy for us, so we should never grow too busy for him. After all, if we really aspire to look like the love of Christ, we have to carry out that love.
