Have you ever wondered why it seems like, even though you push yourself to do good and to please God, it feels like you never have any time for yourself, or you never get to do anything fun, all while everyone else is out there having the time of their lives? It doesn’t seem fair to me. But then again, by doing what is good and right in God’s eyes, we are preparing for eternity. I’ve often wondered why I feel so impelled to lift up those around me who are hurting or are in need, especially when I, myself, could use a lifting up. I think I just want to do for others what God did for me in my darkest times, and share his love and his light. Plus, when we help those around us, rather than helping ourselves, we are not only blessing them, but God shows us that our reward for helping those in need is far greater than anything we could gain by helping ourselves. In Acts 20:35, Paul states, “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Additionally, we are reminded to do good to those around us in need in 1 John 3:16-18, “By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” Again, I’ve found that lifting our eyes upward, and focusing on God, and how I can best serve him, rather than how I can serve myself, or focusing on my own problems, has shown me time and time again, that his way and his will are perfect. You know that phrase, “it’ll all be worth it/pay off in the long run”, it really is true in life, and the same applies to God and his will and reward for us. While living a life of endless vacationing and adventure seems so exciting and fun and amazing in this life, nothing can compare to the glory that God has in store in Heaven, for those who help to spread his love and his word while here on earth.
