What’s in Your Mind?

The other day, I went to go look for something in my bag, and it was full of junk that I had carelessly thrown in but didn’t need. I cleaned my bag out, only keeping what I needed, and it was so much easier to navigate. I was slightly embarrassed and frustrated with myself for letting my bag get so messy in the first place, I mean, if someone were to have looked in it, they would’ve thought I was crazy, or a slob, or both!

I started thinking about it, and I realized that’s often what we do with our minds. We fill our heads up with all this junk, things that don’t really matter. We fill it with anxieties, and fears, and worry. I probably drum up at least ten “What If?” scenarios, a day filling my mind with things that will probably never happen.

But Paul reminds us in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” No, it isn’t always easy to think of good and honorable things all the time, at least not in the world we live in. But if we take time every day to engage ourselves in God’s word, and to be in prayer with him,  and to fill our minds with his promises, we will be able to toss away the worries and fears taking up all that space in our minds. We might even hear him speak to us, saying, “My beloved child, don’t worry and fret so much, my plan for your life is perfect, I’ve created you in my image, and you are beautiful to me.”

So, what’s in your mind? Is it cluttered with fear and anxiety, and all those “What If’s?; or are you pouring sunlight into the dark spaces of your mind, stuffing it full of God’s word, and his promises?
