Dare to Dream

There’s a quote I love from Eleanor Roosevelt that states, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of dreams.” This, I think, is the opposite of what the world tells us to chase after. The world does tell us to chase after our dreams, so long as they fit what the eyes of society thinks we should be doing. We should be chasing after bigger houses and money and high-paying jobs, all of which are great to chase after, but they don’t bring us happiness in the long run. If all we do is work and nothing else, we leave ourselves no time to dream, to create, or to imagine. If we wring ourselves dry working all day, we leave no time for imagining or for dreaming. We’re too tired for that, and plus, isn’t imagination just something for little kids?

Not so. If authors didn’t imagine storylines and characters and plots, there’d be no books. If inventors didn’t create adaptive technologies, people with handicaps would never be able to explore or travel the world. If artists and poets didn’t dream, there’d be no masterpieces. If musicians didn’t come up with new chords or rhythms, there’d be no music. You see, it’s not a bad thing to focus on our careers, and our work; so long as we’re making sure we leave time for ourselves to dream. We shouldn’t forget to dream, to create, and inspire others. After all, Ephesians 2:10 states, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared for us beforehand.” In other words, you and I were created to create. If we busy ourselves with earthly things, leaving no time to create or to dream and imagine, we are not following Peter’s command in 1 Peter 4:10, where he states, “As each of you received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s grace.” And if we’re not using our creative gifts, or daring to dream, we’re not serving others, in the way God intends for us to. So dare to dream, to inspire, to create and imagine, to get your hands dirty. You might just inspire someone else to dream bigger too.
