The Best Bodyguard

There’s a verse in the bible in Philippians that states “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”- Philippians 4:7. If you think about it, having peace is great, and wonderful, but how can it protect us from anything or be a guard?  Are we safe from all harm and evil just because we know Jesus as our Lord? Unfortunately, we are not. The bible makes it very clear that we will, indeed, have problems and face trials and tribulations, and pain and suffering, and sorrow and hurt and hardship, and all the evil and bad and hurtful things. But in John 16:33, Jesus tells us, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” And we are again, reminded of this promise in 1 John 4:4:  1 John 4:4: You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world”. So, if we know Christ, we know that no matter what happens in our lives, we have a God who is greater than all of it. We know that he has overcome death, that he has overcome the whole world, so even when the darkness hits, we always have eternal light. We might still have those thoughts of doubt, fear, and hurt when going through hard times because we are, after all, only human. But having the peace of Christ’s protecting our hearts and our minds means that these thoughts don’t stick around for too long. I like to think of the peace of Christ as a bodyguard. And while peace doesn’t sound like the strong, tough bodyguard we as humans would like to have, it sounds more like the wimpy kid, worldly strength has absolutely nothing on Christ’s peace. When you have the peace of Christ within you, you don’t spend all your time worrying about what’s happening in the world around you. Because while everyone else is listening to their tough bodyguard telling them to fight, that still, small voice of ours is telling us to just be still.
