Have you ever not been able to sleep at night? Sometimes, the world is so quiet around you as you lay awake, struggling to fall back to sleep, that it feels like you’re the only person awake, or even that you’re the only person in the world at that moment. Have you ever been lying awake in your bed, as sleep evades you, and then suddenly, you hear someone else’s footsteps, or see a light under a closed door down the hall, and suddenly you realize that you’re not so alone? However, even if we do notice someone else struggling to sleep, we seldom go in and sit with them. We don’t want to disturb them or keep them from sleeping, & we need to get back to sleep too.
This is so very similar to how we feel and act when facing trials in our lives. We sometimes aren’t looking for someone to fix our problems, so much as we are just hoping for someone to sit with us in the dark, to sit by our side, and remind us that we are not alone. Maybe we need to step out of our rooms of isolation, to meet in the middle of the hallway, and just find solace in the fact that there is someone who knows what we’re dealing with. The greatest secret in life is that no one is perfect, no one has it all together, and we all are just trying our best. So, we must venture outside of our rooms of isolation, and meet someone in the hallway. And maybe, just knowing you’re not alone, will help you as much as it helps them.
