Fix Your Eyes

Have you ever heard someone use the phrase, “Keep your eyes on the road!” while driving? This is because the person who is driving has taken their eyes off of the road ahead of them, and is focusing their attention on someone else.

We often do this in our own lives, where we take our eyes off of Jesus, even if only for one second, and all of a sudden, we’re focusing in on all the craziness and the chaos in the world around us. Suddenly, we feel like we’re drowning, like we have lost control over everything, like nothing we’re doing is going as it should.

We are left quickly wondering where Christ is, why he is not helping us, why he’s not calming the storms of our life. But just like that time in the book of Matthew when Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and focused on the storm instead, Jesus is waiting for us to fix our eyes on him, to trust him. Life becomes so much easier, so much clearer when we fix our eyes on God.

Jesus is greater than any turmoil life could ever throw at us. He has already conquered the storm in our life and is waiting for us to come back to him.

Just because we focus our eyes on God, our storms don’t just disappear, it may still feel like we’re drowning at times. But by fixing our focus on Him, we can take heart, knowing that our lifeguard walks on water.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” (Matthew 14:29-30)

If, like Peter, if we take our eyes off God, and focus on the storm surrounding us, we’ll keep sinking, but we don’t have to. God loves us always, and is waiting, like the father of the prodigal son, with open arms, for us to come running back to him.
